Class Competitions

And the crown goes to....Mrs. Saunder's Classes.  All three of her classes beat us in our math competitions.  While my 1st two classes really gave them a run for their money, my 3rd class hardly tried.  It was embarrassing.  I can see where my other two classes will definitely be competing again to win back the crown!  Congrats Team Saunders!!!

Ch. 5 Test

Friday is our chapter assessment.  Please study and be prepared.

Study your integers!

My students are in desperate need of learning their integers.  We are going to create a chart to have students test out so I will know exactly who needs to learn their integers.  I have encouraged students to use coolmath.com to practice and quizlet has a great set of flash cards and practice quizzes.  Give it a try and let's get over this barrier to our sucess!

Great site!

I have had this app on my phone for some time and I realized how great it would be to share.  Not only can you watch videos of how to do particular math problems but you can do self tests and more.
Your Teacher for Algebra 1

The cost of the app is $9.99 but the online program is $39.50 a month and $159 a year.  That is somewhat expensive when there are so many free and great websites available but the app is wonderful and when do you go anywhere without your phone!  Believe me, I work hard to prevent texting in my class - so they have it constantly:)

Class Update

Well, I can't believe how fast things are moving.  We are about to complete chapter 2 and most of our students need to practice adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing integers.  We covered the rules in our composition books with a graphic organizer.  We are going to need to practice, practice, and practice more.  We have continued to practice exponents and radicals.  As a result, we are improving.  Today, we began working on Learning Upgrade which is our computer program designed for students to work at their own pace to reinforce skills.  Students must get a 95%+ to get a gold medal award.  Finally, we will be working tomorrow on a real-life application project using integers.  Expect to see photos of finished projects!

Homework and upcoming news!

Today, we discussed how to get rid of fractions under radicals, how to get rid of a radical in the denominator, and how to add, subtract, and multiply radicals.  Our homework is 8.4 (1-22) which we began yesterday.  Don't forget that we will be having a test after a brief review on Monday for chapter 8.  Finally, progress reports will be going out next Friday.  I am giving the kids a progress report and they can try to ear some extra points prior to you receiving the official progress report.

Edmodo

Thank you to all parents who came to Back to School Night. I mentioned Edmodo and I wanted to give you more information. Edmodo is an educational tool that is supposed to emulate Facebook but be safe and for teachers and students to use. I have used it for 3 years and it is amazing. First, there are many security measures in place so it is much better than Facebook. I can delete any conversation and students cannot message each other. Also, they only have to provide a first name and they need a code to get into the system. So, creepers cannot infiltrate our system. Second, we can discuss and collaborate on school curriculum during and after school so it extends our day. Third, the kids can build a support system out of school and always get in touch with me.

I like the open communication and the ability to post videos to support their learning. I will sign students up this week and hopefully you will hear how wonderful it is from your students. Thank you!

Welcome Back!

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are excited about this new year at Mt. View. Since you are now 8th graders, you are going to start hearing a lot more about preparing you for high school and college. We will work hard in class but I guarantee you we will also have some fun along the way. I will put my syllabus up soon for your viewing and homework will be posted daily. I am looking forward to meeting you and making this your best year yet at Mt. View.

Love,
Mrs. T

For 2012-2013

Hello or Hola! Since Mt. View students do not yet know their Algebra teacher yet, I will just post a generalized way that you may get a head start for the 2012-2013 school year. Many 7th graders (last school year) asked me about how to prepare for Algebra and these are the suggestions I gave them.

Algebra is challenging but there are specific skills that students must know to be successful in any math class and those skills are: fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing), decimals, how to convert between fractions and decimals, integers (positive and negative numbers- how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide), and operations involving exponents. Mt. View offers students access to Learning Upgrade which will allow you to work on these skills and many others from the 7th grade year. If you do not have your password and username, please refer to the school website and/or call the school (951)845-1627. However, you could also use Khan Academy, Cool Math, or just math.com to work on these skills.

Enjoy your summer and be ready to work hard! For former students going into high school, I also recommend focusing on these skills and practicing.

It has been fun!

Well, I despise goodbyes and so I am not going to say it to any of you. I wish you all the best and my goal is for each of you to graduate. Please send me updates and tell me how great you are doing. It has been a pleasure being your teacher.

Love,
Mrs. Taylor

End of the year!

Well, it is almost the end of our school year. Of course, I will be sad to see my students leave but I know that most of you are ready for high school. I wish you the very best and I hope you will always keep your goals in mind and take a moment before you make decisions that ultimately will effect your ability to reach those goals. Thank you for allowing me to spend a little over 2 hours a day for the 180 days of school. I am proud of you and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. Love, Mrs. T

Here We Go!

We are about to begin our last week of test preparation. Our focus will be on Quadratic equations and graphing. We will continue to use release test questions to help us prepare but this week we will also focus on specific test taking strategies. I think these weapons will make testing proficient achievable for all of us. Finally, have to get through as many learning upgrade levels as possible by the 26th. For most of you, that only means completing 3 lessons a day which is less than an hour. I have offered significant incentives for reaching level 60.

At the end of the race, when you can see the finish line, you never stop running. Instead, you give it everything you have and that is exactly what I am asking each of you to do. Thank you for allowing me to coach you through this journey.

Learning Upgrade

Happy Spring Break!!! I am just giving you the heads up for the next 6 weeks. This week of course is all relaxation. Then, we start 4 weeks of INTENSIVE review and preparation for the CSTs which will be given the last week of April. When I say intensive, I mean be ready to come to school everyday and be prepared to work very hard over the next month. I will probably give a little more homework than normal and expect to have some weekend assignments. I have not done this all year and that is because I save it for now:) I need your commitment to demonstrating how hard we have worked all year. I would like to encourage you to use LEARNING UPRADE and to set your goal to reaching level 60 before CSTs. This is going to be a real challenge for some of you who have just cruised along in Learning Upgrade. But, I am requiring you to complete 4 sections a week for a required graded assignment. Also, anything beyond the 4 sections a week will earn you 10 TEST points extra credit. Remember, you can use your account and do Learning Upgrade at home and there are after school computer lab days (check with me) that can be arranged. I know the 4 sections can be achieved during our computer lab time. The 6th week is CSTs. I will obviously update you before then.

Enjoy your break!

End of 3rd QTR

Well...it is here but it is definitely not over. I want to give you a heads up regarding the final week.

* Monday will be our science benchmark and our final lesson for chapter 11. We will also be reviewing math and science. This is our final day for completing all Learning Upgrade Gold Ribbons. Students should still work on Learning Upgrade but all ribbons achieved will go toward 4th quarter. We have so many lessons to complete before the the end of April.

* Tuesday will be our science benchmark (2 parts). Also, our science projects are due and we will take a math quiz on the final 2 sections of chapter 11.

* Wednesday will be the Algebra benchmark (part 1), more review, and demonstrations of our science projects.

* Thursday will be Algebra benchmark (part 2) and more science demonstrations.

* Friday will be a minimum day and we will take a pre-star assessment so I can determine each student's strengths and weaknesses. This will help me plan our STAR review.
* Then it is spring break and we all really need it:)

Learning Upgrade

I just want to make sure that each student and parent is aware that they have access to Learning Upgrade at home via the internet.  Each student has their username and password and if for some reason they have misplaced this information, I can email it to you!  Please use this learning tool.

Extra Credit/Practice

On Friday we will have our chapter 8 test and students need to be studying exponents.  In my previous post, I provided a great source for learning those rules - although in their composition books they have notes and examples as well.  In addition though, I think it would be beneficial for students to go to the following link http://www.classzone.com/cz/books/ml_alg_1_ca/book_home.htm?state=CA and on the right is a section called Assessment.  Students can take section quizzes (there are 6) and if they get a 90% or more I will give them 5 points extra credit.  This site also provides practice through games.  Finally, if they go to learning upgrade they can practice Exponent Rules and earn a gold ribbon.

PLEASE study!!

Chapter 8

Please get ready and study for your chapter 8 test on exponents.  If you go to the following link and learn the rules of exponents via Khan academy and use your composition books, then you should do great!

Happy New Year!

As of tomorrow, we will have 69 days of purpose!  That means 69 school days until the STAR test.  We are in 3rd quarter and we will be working sooooo hard.  I would like to welcome all my new students.  I hope that your adjustment is easy and you enjoy the class.  I will begin posting homework on this site starting next week.  We are doing a lot of review and have been completing most assignments in class.

 Sincerely,
Mrs. T
